The Freedom Factory in Bradenton, Florida, has become a centerpiece of local pride following a major infield renovation in spring 2024. Purchased and revamped a few years ago by well-known YouTuber and car enthusiast Cletus McFarland, the infield grass was replaced with new varieties just ahead of a race in April 2024, creating a vibrant and functional centerpiece for the track.
The Freedom Factory completed an infield renovation with CitraBlue St. Augustine, CitraZoy Zoysia and NorthBridge Bermudagrass in spring 2024.
Sod Solutions Professionals managed the project by donating three turfgrass varieties while partnering with Allen Hayne, known online as ‘The Lawn Care Nut,’ to oversee the grass installation and maintenance at Freedom Factory. The donated grass varieties included NorthBridge® Bermudagrass, CitraZoy® Zoysia and CitraBlue® St. Augustine. Axle Logistics handled turfgrass transportation from farms to the track.
NorthBridge Bermudagrass, installed on the backstretch as a key focal point, was praised by Hayne for its rapid root establishment. CitraZoy Zoysia was chosen for the area near the burnout pad due to its soft, barefoot-friendly nature. CitraBlue St. Augustine was used on the two wings of the track.
“CitraBlue St. Augustine has fast become my favorite St. Augustine grass," Hayne said, complementing its deep, dark blue-green color and thick growth pattern which provides weed resistance.
The first race at Freedom Factory, the Cleetus McFarland Driving Experience, took place just four weeks after the grass was laid in March. Hayne recalled how attendees were captivated by the vibrant grass during a concert held on the track during the event.
