North Carolina State Field Day Showcases the Future

Over 800 landscape professionals were in attendance at the NC State Field Day on August 10th to witness a historic day for the NC State turfgrass breeding program. A check in the amount of $321,984 was presented to the university by Turf Research North Carolina, a consortium of 16 NC Sod Producers and Sod Solutions, who have partnered and agreed to provide these funds over the next six years to facilitate the breeding of improved varieties of St. Augustine, bermudagrass, zoysiagrass and fescue. On hand to present the check were Al Wooten and John Williams, the current and immediate past president of the North Carolina Sod Producers Association (NCSPA), respectively, and Tobey Wagner, president of Sod Solutions. Receiving the check on behalf of NC State were Dr. Susana Milla-Lewis and Dr. Steve Lommel, research director for the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service.
